  • To manage all aspects of Quality, Food Safety & Legality on site. 
  • To proactively lead all Managers & Team Leaders and inturn members of  the site Technical team 
  • To drive continuously for improvement in site standards by advising site Operations and Engineering teams in technical matters, identify issues, problem solve and ensure root cause is identified and corrective and preventative actions are taken.


Hovis Technical Competencies



  • Ensures team members are fully engaged in the pursuit of quality improvement in product and process.  Leading a Total Quality approach.
  • Facilitate step-change thinking to sustain the Quality agenda, ensuring the continued delivery of in specification products as monitored by BQED.
  • Governance of the site quality plan – ensuring timely delivery of quality improvement projects.
  • Supporting the overarching complaint reduction program – providing technical governance of the complaints system and proactively supporting manufacturing.
  • Providing a senior customer interface on Quality concerns following complaints or alternative communication – ensuring a joined-up agenda between BQED (Best Quality Every Day) and the site Senior Leadership Team.
  • Takes every opportunity to speak to team members about quality so it is part of everyday conversation. Briefs team on a regular basis and in a meaningful way to ensure quality is at the forefront of their thinking.
  • Enables team to take action about quality of product; aids and supports decisions so they feel safe and empowered to do so.


  • Ensures proactive measures are taken to minimise risk in the workplace.
  • Supporting the TOPS H&S monitoring process and associated non-conformance closeouts (where applicable).
  • Ensuring the team is proactively involved with H&S by ensuring technical colleagues are reporting Hazard and near-miss incidents.
  • Ensuring the appropriate level of H&S training has been assigned to direct reports.
  • Escalation of H & S concerns to the appropriate level.
  • Embed safety measures across all technical team activities to reduce accidents.


  • Ensures team members are fully trained and aware of legal requirements and internal / customer standards.
  • Ensuring an overarching audit system is developed and delivered.
  • Providing governance of the HACCP plan and pre-requisite control programs.
  • To effectively communicate emerging issues or issues which may influence product safety from wider markets.
  • Coaching and mentoring of site teams to ensure that audit standards are applied consistently and appropriately.
  • Ensuring timely close-out of incidents of non- conformance or appropriate vertical escalation.
  • Point of contact for Local Authority - ensuring timely closure of non-conformances or concerns.
  • To assist the site in finding expertise or resources beyond the site teams as and when needed to solve technical issues or to accelerate performance.
  • Ensuring all customer / internal / BRC standards for food safety are achieved -  senior customer interface for Audits.
  • To deputise as appropriate in accordance with the incident and crisis management manual.
  • Site point of contact for Central Compliance Team.
  • Ensuring the in-house pest control program is fully implemented to the full extent of the customer and internal code of practice.


  • Lead the Hygiene function through the Hygiene Manager and their shift teams ensuring the site standards are maintained.
  • Ensure the site routine cleaning schedule is maintained, reviewed and audited in line with requirements.
  • Ensure the regular plant cleans are resourced and delivered to the appropriate standards.
  • To manage the segregation, storage and timely removal of all waste in line with budget.
  • Oversee the hygiene and waste budgets to ensure annual forecasts are achieved. 
  • To ensure all operatives are appropriately trained and comply with all legal obligations associated with their role.
  • Work with the operations teams to ensure they are:-
  • fully aware of their responsibilities for clean as you go GMP practices.
  • fully trained to carry out plant cleaning to the standards laid out on cleaning instruction cards
  • fully trained alongside core hygiene team members in all legally required training from COSHH to specific equipment use and maintenance.


  • Understands the key areas of the process to be able to manage resources and schedules accordingly in the short term.
  • Ensuring that the technical team activities are monitored and managed.
  • Managing and developing the overarching QMS.
  • Ensures that the technical teams activities positively impact product safety and quality.
  • Supports the development and implementation of process improvements by proactively seeking opportunities.
  • Supports the development and implementation of the BQED process.


  • Uses data appropriately to identify areas of cost-saving and revenue opportunity and delivers/escalates as appropriate.  Takes full ownership of their budgetary responsibilities.
  • Instrumental in setting the annual budget – supporting the financial team to accurately deliver costs against budget , ensuring appropriate resources are made available to the technical function.
  • Overarching management of the department budget.
  • Stakeholder in cost reduction strategies across not limited to the technical function.
  • Supports the cost-effectiveness process in a proactive and timely manner whilst ensuring adherence to technical protocols.


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience



  • Experience in a senior technical role in food manufacturing, retail or service
  • People leadership and management experience
  • HACCP Qualification (Level 4) and Pest Control experience
  • Experience or previous responsibility for Hygiene and/or Compliance.
  • Budget management

  • Ability to manage customers and enforcement authorities
